Angel Of The Lord Novel Part Thirty-Three (33) By Jose R. Leveriza II
Both sides played it easy to minimize injuries to their top players during the exhibition match. The two teams had already qualified for the final four. Winning tonight’s game didn’t even count to earn a much sought after bye position that bestowed a win once advantage to automatically advance to the championship round. The second stringers got to show their wares during the longer exposure on the court. Still the prestige factor kept the diehards on the edge of their seats. The lackluster play did not dampen the thirst for blood.
Indiana Jays brand of play was cut out for such listless action. He can ease up on the breakneck ferocity as per the coach’s bidding but a plodding and laid back game was fertile ground for Jason’s stealthy forays. He was a hard court scientist who loved to anticipate moves and read the minds of the opposing team as well as those of his own teammates. He stole the ball three times and caused two other turnovers. Indiana Jays was all over the court running rings around the hapless back up crew. His pace was lackadaisical but he managed to upend the ten-point lead of the Eagles single handedly to put the Archers in front by a free throw.
The Eagles coach thought it was time to teach Indiana Jays a lesson or maybe to ground him with a handicap that would ideally carryover to the all important game. He tapped his burly enforcer to guard Jason and wait for the opportunity to rough him up in a not too blatant or obvious way. Jason snagged an offensive rebound and leaped back into the air to roll the ball in. The well-built strong-arm artist plowed with head and elbow into Indiana Jays back and sent him sprawling against the padding at the base of the goal post. The La Salle gallery was enraged by the flagrant foul and pelted the court with heavy high value coinage. The benches got emptied as the teams stormed to the middle of the court to duke it out. It took Jason to douse flaring tempers when he got up with two arms in the air and danced an NFL touchdown jig while laughing like a lunatic.
He kissed the culprit on the cheek with a loud smack and told him he tackled like a woman. The chastened player bristled with anger and struggled to free himself from Jason’s vise like embrace to try to hit him again. Jason pressed secretly over the man’s kidney with an acupuncture grip he learned in Macau that made the bucking bronco become pliant all of sudden with a benumbing pain, which rendered him instantly immobile and unable to utter a sound. With affected joviality, Jason passed the limp form to his Eagle teammates who were surprised by the burden of his still weight as he sagged like a sack into their arms. They retreated to their bench dragging their stricken muscle man while in the middle of the confusion the referees dogged their trail with exaggerated signals that the erring player was being thrown out of the game.
Jason Burke never dished out violence out of hatred for the enemy. He always thought of the use of deadly force as part of the job and never a personal thing. His ideology lighted passion but he never lost track that the performance of duty whether to kill or maim in order to incapacitate a target stemmed from a higher calling to protect, advance, and ensure the national interests of the United States of America. Cruelty, revenge, or personal animosity never colored his keen sense of balance and objectivity. The naiveté which trespassed into his professional detachment when it came to violence directed against his fellow men was that the enemy was nothing else but a friend with an opposing agenda.
The La Salle coach decided to bench Indiana Jays for the remainder of the contest as a peace offering to the Ateneo side which brought the ire of the La Salle faithful on him. His seat became hotter when the Archers lost by five points at the sound of the final buzzer. The coach remained steadfast with his view that it was better to preserve the front liners for the championship instead of running the risk of injuries in a no stakes meeting. Nevertheless catcalls to oust him floated down from the stands and were only stilled when the team assembled before the audience for the ritualistic singing of the school anthem at the end of every outing.
Trooping down to the dug-out behind his co-players, Jason glimpsed Mike Arcanghel with his girlfriend Lassel waving to him from the box section. He craned his neck to search for Marita Dalit and finally saw her seated one row behind them. They all got in with free tickets courtesy of Jason’s guests allocation. Marita Dalit looked so lovely as she waved to him with a sweet smile which mixed up the butterflies inside Jason with the fluttering of infatuation and caution.

Jason Burke was hailed as Indiana Jays by the press and the fans. The trademark green kerchief on his head helped contrast his basketball renown from the austere circumstances of a Mormon Preacher decked in standard black and white with preppie tie simplicity. The front act of a missionary offered Jason a lot of elbow room to comb the neighborhoods to establish contact with his network of informers. Meanwhile rubbing elbows with the cream of society who gravitated to the exciting hoopla of basketball gave Jason the advantage of having valuable listening posts in the upper crusts of the business and official circles.
Jason Burke knew it was a matter of time before Bader put two and two together to blow his cover. It was actually a decoy in an elaborate set-up to suck the guerilla in. Getting Jason’s arch foe to show his face in a tumultuous crowded setting where a basketball square off between two storied rivals in the collegiate circuit created big time hype was the most loaded scenario favorable to the cockroach like stealth, persistence or hit and hide stratagem which marked Jason Burke’s CIA trained destructive talent. Already Jason set this virtual minefield among the audience in future schedules where every section was planted with GPS enabled lookouts primed to spring the trap and tighten the noose on the would be assassin. In fact the metal detectors at the entrance were manned by members of what Richard, ‘In The Sky’, jokingly referred to as Jason’s Text Brigade.
Damning scoops from Langley showed a pattern of Japanese collusion with the Chinese in technology transfer. American interests were being compromised because the United States owned a big part of the patents and the intellectual property tied to the modern production techniques and know how being secretly spirited to the hands of the giant manufacturing infrastructures in the mainland. The Japanese businessmen sought to keep a low profile and remained in the background of the gargantuan leap of Chinese industry with nary a peep about the erosion of their markets to the Chinese incursion. Jason and the ambassador code named Lady Diana concluded at the end of their brainstorming in the steam bath that the Japanese probably held an underground pecuniary interest in the Chinese factories. This would be the closest guess why the Japanese would underhandedly support the Chinese claim to the vast Spratlys oil reserve by way of a sinister plot to prop up Bader in his quest to sabotage the American political initiative.
Lady Diana dropped another bombshell on Jason as they suited up in the locker room. She disclosed with a grim face that Marita Dalit who shot it out in the hospital to defend Jason was a Japanese Intelligence agent. Both of them felt stumped about the incident which indicated that their tentative conclusions about the Japanese involvement could be off track. Jason with his usual cockroach tendency thought that it’s always best to come close to the target in a creeping way and so hatched a plan with the blessings of the pretty diplomat who exited with an aside in mock reproach about Jason’s romantic inclinations towards the good looking Marita. The plan was to invite Marita to the ballgame so that they could date as a foursome with Mike Arcanghel and his girlfriend Lassel after the game.

Part Thirty-One (31) Angel Of The Lord Novel By Jose Roxas Leveriza Featuring The Basketball Savvy Of Jason Burke From Indiana, Overt Shooting Guard For The De La Salle Green Archers And Covert Operative For The CIA In Manila
The esoteric spectator crowd erupted in an uproar. The din in the coliseum where every inch of space was filled sounded deafening. Blue and green clashed as banners from an ancient rivalry that got hoisted flippantly from hearts worn on sleeves. Every bit of value and honor including huge bets were staked with an all or nothing and do or die stand. Skills and drills weighed for the most part but the rest took a chancy gamble in the fortuitous bounce of a round basketball at center court.
The scorecard for the decade saw the Green Archers as the perennial champions with the Blue Eagles tallying up an occasional trophy or two. However, the total count for the historical toss up put the Eagles comfortably ahead although such fabled exploits fade from memory with the passing of previous generations. The present contest unfolding with dramatic flair in the middle of the arena did not count as qualifier for the final four but was merely being played to round up the no bearing games. The coach expressly told Jason Burke to turn down the heat to preserve his fire, spit, and form for the upcoming championship stretch.
Jason Burke’s ambidextrous dribble, his long tentacle reach on a gangling frame an inch above six feet, and his catchy green bandana wound around his Marine cut head in hell rider fashion made keeping a low profile a white man’s burden in an ensemble overwhelmingly cast in brown. All that aside, he easily drew attention because he always moved full throttle. In a loose ball melee, there’s always hell to pay because Jason fell pell-mell on top of any scramble. In a slow break he stood out like a glitch on the screen with sparks that flew in spurts around lazy moving ball carriers. Jason Burke played both ends of the court like a possessed soul after the tip-off and never let up to be a festering thorn on the side of the enemy. Ergo, in tonight’s game, he took the coach’s order to cool it meaning he shouldn’t dive for the ball to fly out of bounds into the face of the TV crew.
The eagles jumped to a ten point lead in the early going of the second quarter. The coach meant to keep his starting five in the sidelines but the La Salle gallery felt the sting and hollered for Jason to be fielded. The coach obliged grudgingly and sent Jason into the fray at the next buzzer. Jason lost no time and intercepted the ball in a cut-in drive that he read so well from the body flex of the assist maker. On the break to the opposite basket, he blazed, more like floated in a smoke of dust like the roadrunner to leave the whole field behind and lay in the ball with fundamental polish, swishing it through the hoop smoothly with the curl of the wrist. The lack of circus fanfare did not stop the La Salle bleachers from exploding in raucous cheering complete with drum rolls.

Angel Of The Lord Novel Part Thirty (30) By Jose Roxas Leveriza
The jet propulsion Super Cobra of the U.S. Marine Corps bearing Jason Burke breached the top of the tallest structure lining the boulevard by the bay with plenty to spare then dropped like a stone to crest above the trees inside the U.S. embassy compound toward the open sea. It catapulted to the wide expanse of the sea then veered in a crunching 180 degree turn which flung it sideways in the air with the straining of the G forces. The daredevil stunt drew a grudging smile from Jason Burke as he got pinned to the seat but the ambassadress who was watching the acrobatic event from her bullet proof office window was not amused. A sonic backlash whipped through the complex which was a showcase of American presence and with thundering shakes converted the meaning of Visiting Forces to bullying powers.
The commander of the Marine detachment tasked to secure the premises was on hand to officially welcome Jason Burke as he jumped out to the manicured green lawn. The indentation on the landscape marked the exact same spot where the lumbering gunship always landed with a precision to leave the rest of the garden unscathed. Jason Burke saluted the senior officer and walked behind him smartly as the Captain led the way to the annex building which housed the executive offices. Jason Burke strove to look neat and affable despite the crusty bullet holes slightly above his chest and his dirt streaked shirt which waged translucent with sweat to reveal the outline of his bullet proof vest underneath.
“Guess the local press will have a field day with accounts about their favorite basketball import hanging under a military helicopter above the busy overhead train, Reverend.” The Marine aide of the lady ambassador made the astute observation as he stayed his open palm near the scanner that probed prints and blood type to crosscheck with identity files subject to security levels of access. It took a mere four seconds for the vault like entrance door to buzz open with the super efficient crunching of the microchips in the computer that backstopped the electronic screener. “They paid more attention to Bader’s daring jump over the bus and the jeep. They thought of me as a loser who didn’t deserve a second look because I failed to follow suit.” Both of them snickered form Jason Burke’s self deprecating humor.
“Jason, you’re a mess but I’m glad you are unhurt.” The female career diplomat gestured for him to take a seat as she walked from the one way panoramic bay window to her ornate deep mahogany desk. After comparing notes about the trivial aspects of the recent escapade at the hospital and the sketches of the identities of characters involved, the attractive head of the American diplomatic delegation in Manila wasted no time to delve directly to the crux of the United States initiative in the region which she was tasked to promote with Jason Burke as the lead enforcer in the covert arena. “The Secretary of State has sent a confidential memo citing the belief of Langley that the Japanese are secretly supporting Bader and have given him a safe house somewhere.” Jason Burke remained quiet as he pondered the brewing complications of such a development in his domestic haunts.
“Come let’s brainstorm in the spa. You need a good cleaning up. Maybe we can figure out a good strategy to unmask the Japanese objective in this unsavory and daunting Machiavellian exercise.” The good looking female ambassador displayed her well proportioned shape as she got up from behind the table and led the way to the private spa with in-house masseur in the adjacent wing of the edifice. “Beep Richard in his lair that connects to that space station with an eye in the sky to take a time out and not pan us while we try to get some work done while getting a rub down.” She teased.

Angel Of The Lord Novel Part Twenty-Nine (29) By Jose Roxas Leveriza
Angel Of The Lord Novel Part Twenty-Nine (29) By Jose Roxas Leveriza
The chopper droned nearer. It was a U.S. Marine jet prop Cobra painted an earthy brown camouflage. A darker Vietnam vintage Huey sporting the emblems of the Philippine Air Force appeared behind it. The older craft chopped the air waves with a sharp flapping echo. It banked from a safe distance to give cover to the Marine whirlybird showing the unmistakable outline of a SWAT sharpshooter toting a long rifle perched on the wide open side.
The stealthy Cobra zipped down to a holding suspension above Jason Burke and threw down a line. It whisked him up and away in a sharp climb. Jason Burke showed off his Special Forces commando training ruggedness by tipping the rope forward while he pulled up faster than the reining in of the harness.
A serviceman grabbed his hand and dragged him safely inside. They could have zapped Bader with their rockets but the elevated railway might have been blown to bits, he jested as Jason got settled and gave the thumbs up to thank him over the din. Lady Diana pushed the scramble button on the crew and their warcraft from the U.S. Embassy grounds to retrieve her devoted knight, the Marine corpsman added further. They gave the code name to the lady ambassador because she was so regal and charismatic like Lady Di and was so appealing even at middle age like Diana Keaton.

Part Twenty-Eight (28) Of The Blogspot Novel Series By Jose Roxas Leveriza Entitled Angel Of The Lord Featuring Jason Burke CIA Operative Dubbed As The Cockroach, Hard To Kill And Hard To Find
Jason Burke saw Bader open fire. By the third report he wedged down to the crook of the right wall with the ground. Jason felt the grounding from the high voltage magnetic rails but that was safer than the rain of bullets in the air. He knew that he was out of range by the handgun’s effective trajectory. Still wayward shots could get lucky which was Bader’s desperate gamble to put him off. Jason flattened himself sideways against the bottom to offer the thinnest angle.
Jason Burke rested his head on his firing arm which held the .9MM HK and drew a bead on Bader who was now down on the ground. The small pops in the far distance from the pump action shotguns of the security detail kept up their continued staccato with a hail of ball bearing projectiles that plunked harmlessly short of the target but kept the cornered fighter pinned down as a precaution. Jason held his fire for fear of hitting the reckless spectators who encrusted the gunners like ornery barnacles.
The action changed quickly and became grimmer for Bader when a helicopter appeared in the horizon. A sniper rifle with a scope wielded by a SWAT marksman would spell doom for the besieged guerilla on the wide open elevated duct. Bader didn’t wait for the copter to hover closer. He sprang on his feet while crouching low and made for the side wall to clamber on top for a quick glance of the streets below. After a moment of hesitation, Bader took the plunge to land on top of the roof of a long passenger bus which was caught in the traffic standstill. He rolled across as soon as he impacted to cushion his fall and was carried by the momentum to a softer landing on top of a passenger utility jeep on the right. The bus suffered an ugly dent while the jeep survived with minor damage. The passengers in the smaller vehicle screamed and ran out in panic. The nearby throng swarmed like a violated beehive.
Jason watched Bader lose himself in the melee. He entertained thoughts to duplicate the feat but decided on the side of prudence. He called Richard on the GPS device with a satellite hook up. Richard’s sky camera was no good to pick up Bader’s trail in the swirling humanity. They both decided it’s pack up time for the day’s shoot. Their quarry got away again to pursue his mission to throw a monkey wrench on the agenda of the lady ambassador from the most powerful nation on earth to influence to some degree the outcome of the next presidential elections. Jason Burke was her crusader tasked to preserve her gains and impetus on the project to secure the richest underwater oilfield reserve remaining in the globe by proxy for the United States. With an exploration treaty, the favored treatment by the next Head of State, and the unmatched might of the U.S. Seventh Naval Fleet, the Spratly Isles stood to fall into the coffers of the Western Powers if only Bader could be contained and his scent detected once more.
The incumbent President of Chinese descent was talking on the cell phone to Ellebana with a field of well wishers held at bay by his phalanx of guards well out of harm’s way. Harry Sey was relieved to hear that Ellebana, his favorite niece and upstart crusading Department of Justice Prosecutor who got the position based on her own merit as a bar topnotcher over Harry’s hands off devolvement as Chief Executive, was given a clean bill of health by the doctors at the government hospital after engaging in a running gunbattle with a suspected terrorist. Harry wanted to get to the bottom of Ellebana’s mysterious handiness with a gun and so he invited her to have dinner with him at Malacanang palace the next evening. Ellebana tried to evade it but couldn’t and so the appointment was set.
Harry’s mind drew links between the unnerved condition of the lady ambassador at the private lunch earlier and the reports about an American Preacher who was involved in the incident that took the stopping of the mass transit railway to bring to an unsatisfactory denouement. His own father the mall tycoon always intimated to him that the Koumintang establishment in Taiwan who were reputedly the old man’s top financial backers would possibly come to the fork on the highway where they have to choose between the waking giant Mother China and the historical alliance with the United States in the matter of the claims to the largest remaining fossil energy source which could fuel the ballast for ascendancy to world power in the 21st Century. His father warned him that to stay on in the Presidency could make Harry a likely pawn in the ensuing proxy war.
