LESLEY LEVERIZA

The air is cool and fresh and being high up on a ridge dropping off to a wide expanse of sky overlooking the majesty of a volcano in the midst of a serene lake, the windy gusts blow away all the pollution far to the blue yonder like a giant ventilator. You can’t help feel the climb to higher elevation as you drive nearer to Tagaytay City. Shifting from overdrive to mesh the engine to throttle with the added pull of gravity comes often to manual gears as the final approach inclines upwards.

Crisp and gentle are the scents and green country scenes that stir the traveler’s countenance. Nature is such an invigorating fresher upper. Dispirited souls and weary bodies get injected with renewed bounce and light heartedness as if fidgety balloons dribbling manically to flee and soar to the heavens. It helps that the smooth highway is evenly graded to make the going freewheeling as if riding on wings of momentum. Snatches of rural scenery flit by in patchwork colors like raggedy quilts flying in the breeze.

At the start of the journey, Coastal Highway snaking by the bay is a quick fix from the cacophony of commerce and bubbling throng that hold hostage the spiritual Mecca of Catholic Baclaran. Merging to the trail of old Aguinaldo Highway seems a letdown as the same broiling pit greets you with bumper to vendor crazy amalgams of oversized buses and sneaky jeeps fighting off the encroachment of persistent tricycles and pedestrians into every available corner. The traffic enforcer wavers like a hysterical scarecrow drained of every bit of deference.

Traffic restores moods to lightness as it speeds up via Imus town. The uninterrupted hum of the motor soothes sordid feelings like orchestra music waxing freely with swaying of the baton. Anxiety alerts are toned down as decibels with anticipation of good times take over in the form of festering thirst and grumbling palates. It’s too early for anything and too premature for ejaculation so how come the pesky hardness tingles in the groin all of the sudden? You reach over the console and gently squeeze the elbow of your partner with shy affection. He blows smoke your way and grins with yellowed teeth and stubble on chin perplexity.
